Description
The University of Chicago invites applications for appointment as Instructional Professor (IP) at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full in the Department of Psychology (https://psychology.uchicago.edu/) and the College. This is a full-time, career-track teaching position to begin on or after July 1, 2026. The initial appointment term is from three to five years depending on rank and is renewable with opportunity for promotion within the Instructional Professor track based on performance review.Academic rank and compensation are dependent upon qualifications.The successful candidate will annually teach 6 quarter-long undergraduate classes. Assignments may include intensive discussion courses in the Social Sciences Core curriculum, as well as introductory survey-level classes and upper-level electives in psychology. Although the area of expertise in psychology is open, we are particularly interested in candidates who are qualified to teach a broad range of topics in perception, action, and cognition as well as courses in advanced research methods, and who have experience using these methods to conduct psychological research. The IP will also participate in co-curricular and service activities that help support the undergraduate teaching mission of the department. This can include occasional workshops, advising students on the use of research methods in their own research projects, and providing mentorship to students that may include professional development and advice navigating the undergraduate major. The position includes time and support for their own professional development.
The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and Service Employees International Union.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in psychological science or a related discipline focusing on research questions central to areas of psychology represented in our department; the degree must be in-hand prior to the start date. Teaching experience with undergraduate courses focusing on basic research questions in psychology is required. Candidates with a record of designing and teaching courses to undergraduate students at a highly selective university are strongly preferred.

Applications must include 1) a cover letter, 2) a current curriculum vitae, 3) a teaching statement, 4) syllabi for two proposed undergraduate courses, 5) a writing sample that describes the candidate's research experience in a way that demonstrates their ability to communicate psychological research and support undergraduate research projects, and 6) three letters of reference. In addition, if available, teaching evaluations or other evidence of teaching performance in courses previously taught is strongly preferred.
